The Gordon Bennett Motor Cup is an old motor racing competition.
In 1899, James Gordon Bennett junior, the wealthy owner of the American daily New York Herald, proposed to the Automobile Clubs to organize an international Prize with national teams. The regulations specify in particular that the annual event will be organized by the winning country of the previous edition, and that it is the nationality of the car manufacturer that counts, not that of the driver. Each country can therefore enter three nationally designed cars. France was, at the time, the world's leading automobile manufacturer, as well as the main organizer of races, so it was the Automobile Club de France which organized the first race.
The race replaces city-to-city races (Paris-Berlin, Paris-Vienna, Paris-Madrid).
In just a few years, the Gordon Bennett Cup became an event of global significance. It was on this occasion that the national colors of automobiles were introduced. After the last edition in 1905, it was replaced by the ACF grand prix, the ACF no longer accepting the conditions of the regulations which limited the number of cars per country to three, while France had many manufacturers of quality who had to engage in a fratricidal struggle.
The qualifiers for the Auvergne circuit in 1905 then saw two Brasiers and a Lorraine Dietrich set off for France.
Léon Thery was the winner of this last edition.
