La Piscine is an Italian-French film directed by Jacques Deray, released in 1969.
Jean-Paul (Alain Delon), advertising agent, and Marianne (Romy Schneider), who have lived happily for two and a half years, enjoy life in a superb villa with a swimming pool above Saint-Tropez.
They are interrupted by a phone call from Harry (Maurice Ronet) announcing his arrival. He is an aging playboy, working in a record company, Jean-Paul's best friend and a former lover of Marianne. He is pretentious, having come in a superb sports car – a Maserati Ghibli – having made “Paris Saint-Tropez in 7:15 the day before yesterday” (sic). He came with his 18-year-old daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin), a disturbing woman-child.
Marianne suggests that Harry and Penelope stay for a few days, which does not please Jean-Paul very much. They take a drive, but Jean-Paul regrets their destroyed intimacy, as well as Harry's pretentious, rich and old handsome side.
Harry leaves for Saint-Tropez. Meanwhile, the couple is a little embarrassed by the presence of Penelope, who is too wise and introverted. Harry returns with a group of more or less false friends and real freeloaders. Jean-Paul has difficulty accepting this celebration which is imposed on them. After seeing Marianne dancing tenderly with Harry, he becomes closer to Penelope who feels like an outsider at the party.
